Vinyl liner pool and spa in Davisburg MI by Legendary Escapes with concrete bar landscape lighting

The homeowner of this incredible custom pool design was looking for a backyard environment that was perfect for entertaining large groups of people. The pool was designed in the rear yard to be an extension of the finished walk-out basement and entertainment area for the homeowner. The pool itself, which features tumbled bluestone coping and a large water volume, sits next to a raised spillover spa. For evening entertaining, the custom hand-carved tree trunk fire pit provides a great place to roast marshmallows and make s’mores. The poured concrete counter-top is attached to the house and serves as a great way to bring the two spaces together in both function and aesthetics.

Vinyl Liner Pool in Highland, MI 2007, raised spillover spa, outdoor kitchen, waterfall, decorative

There is so much to look at when you enter this back yard. The pool is a large custom shape freeform/kidney pool with a large shallow end, and deep end hopper. The contour step in the deep end is accented by hand carved boulders. The waterfall that splashes into the deep end has stone accents and a stepped up appearance, showcasing a sheer descent waterfall in front of an artist rendered mural on canvas. The spa features a tiered step and is finished with a tumbled bluestone cap and matching step, with accent stone used on the spa surround. Steps were created to take a visitor to the lower outdoor kitchen area, and open air tiki bar for seating. The patio is colored/textured concrete, and the pool features accent low voltage lighting for a great night time environment. The fence posts were finished with a reclaimed barnwood face to make them a step up from regular steel posts. The equipment for this pool is Pentair, with a salt generating system (one of the first that we installed) on this pool. Keep in mind, if you have a pool this large, two salt generating cells may be needed to ensure for adequate chlorine production.

Vinyl Liner Pool and Retaining in Dexter MI by Legendary Escapes Pools (9)

Challenging back yards are a favorite of the pool guy. This yard had an extreme elevation change to contend with, so a large retaining wall was created to bring the pool grade lower than the back door of the house. A stairway out of boulders was created as the step down to the pool. The vinyl liner pool was installed with a concrete patio and is a family favorite for swimming and entertaining.

This pool is a great backyard pool in Livonia, MI. With simple design of a rectangular pool with a vinyl liner, and colored/textured concrete patio, this pool designed with the family in mind is a great, relaxing backyard oasis. One of the benefits of installing a rectangular pool is the ease of installation and ordering of the safety cover for the winter months, which I am sure this homeowner appreciates! They have also been cleaning their pool with the only pool cleaner we recommend, the Dolphin. Be careful where you purchase your Dolphin pool cleaner, however. The best place to purchase is from an actual pool company. Sometimes you can find them on discount websites, or from a warehouse store where they get them in bulk – some of them are not designed for use in a vinyl liner pool, and can cause liner issues. The best bet is to get your Dolphin from a pool company that you know and trust. *as an aside, and advertising moment, we are able to help supply you with a Dolphin pool cleaner anywhere in the country.

Vinyl Liner Pool, Plymouth, MI Extra Large Vinyl Liner Pool 30×50

This backyard pool in Plymouth, MI is almost like two pools in one. The contour shape features an extra large shallow end, and deep end hopper. The pool was constructed with a vinyl liner pool, and traditional coping. It was finished with a poured concrete patio surround, and further out a decorative concrete patio for ample seating and entertaining area. The liner selected was in one of the darker liner patterns, allowing the intense blue color we see to come through. The homeowners of this custom designed pool in Plymouth have one of the larger vinyl liner pools – and a water volume that is handled by their Pentair equipment, which is one of our favorite brands.

So many homeowners ask where they should locate their swimming pools equipment. Traditionally, it is located off the back of the house. In this case, the equipment is around the side of the house, which means a very long run for the underground plumbing. With some well placed accent trees, or custom designed area near the pool, equipment can usually be hidden. With a long run to the equipment, priming the pump can sometimes take longer than usual, and extra care needs to be taken when it is time for winterization to make sure all the water is out of the pumps to prevent freezing.

Rectangle Vinyl Liner with Spa and Auto Cover in Wolverine Lake, MI by Legendary Escapes Pools (4)

Many homeowners who live on the lakes here in Michigan still enjoy putting in a backyard swimming pool. Sometimes it’s a great opportunity to do a vanishing edge pool that makes it look like the pool is spilling over into the lake.

At this pool, the homeowner wanted a backyard swimming pool and spa for entertaining and enjoyment. The pool was built as a vinyl liner pool, with a corner step, and built to use an automatic cover (a great investment to keep the pool covered, clean, and the heat in for longer seasonal use). A hot tub was also installed that spills over into the pool, and plenty of space was left for patio. The pool guy will tell you that the patio is one of the most important elements of swimming pool design, and one that is often neglected. At the average backyard party, whether there are 8 people in attendance, or 50, the average number of people in the pool at any given time is usually 7. So where are the remaining attendees? They are using the patio area to mix, mingle and converse. So plan your pool to fit as many as you’d like, and then build your patio to make sure they all have a comfortable place to hang out, whether in the pool or not.

Vinyl Pool with Kiddie Pool and Turtle Milford MI by Legendary Escapes Pools (2)

This custom backyard swimming pool in Milford, MI is a fun place to be! The pool was constructed with a unique shape and was built using a vinyl liner (Cayman Tile/Reef Pattern). The homeowner wanted a shallow area for children to play, which was designed into the kiddie splash pool, with just under a foot of water, and spillover into the pool, with a spitting turtle custom carved out of concrete for the little ones to play. The coping on the pool was finished with a tumbled bluestone, and the patio a colored/textured concrete. One side of the pool was left to accomodate some landscaping, and features a bluestone pathway/walkway in a similar stone to the coping. The homeowner here uses our recommendation for the automatic pool cleaner: the Dolphin for ease of swimming pool vacuuming.

This custom swimming pool in Milford, MI is a great example of a combination of elements that come together to form a truly spectacular backyard swimming pool.

Southfield, MI Indoor Gunite Pool and Spa 2011

One of @askthepoolguy’s 2011 projects was this indoor gunite pool with spillover spa. The geometric pool was finished in white marcite with a blue tile line, and features an accent waterfall in the corner. When designing your indoor pool, make sure to allow for adequate air flow and venting and moisture remediation, an important consideration in the construction of an indoor pool. Another recommendation is to consider what qualities you’d like the room to have for the best view, seating area, and for sound control if you plan to entertain any number of people. With water and walls in an enclosed space, the noise will be travelling and bouncing off the walls – literally. So plan for this with some well placed and strategically designed elements for the best custom indoor swimming pool experience possible.

A stone/tile coping was used as the pool surround, and the flooring is an accent tile.

Saline, MI Vinyl Gunite Hybrid Pool 2009

Combining the benefits of a gunite pool, with the features of a liner pool proved to be a unique and custom experience for @askthepoolguy Al Curtis. This pool, that does feature a vinyl liner constructed pool as the main pool body, also features a sun shelf, custom seating area with floating concrete countertop, and deep end step in gunite. The sun shelf is accented by a tile waterslide, and sheer descent waterfall.

The homeowners here also do a lot of backyard entertaining around their pool, so an outdoor kitchen with painted mural backdrop and landscape lighting was created. There is also a lower level firepit carved to look like a tree trunk, accented by reclaimed barn wood on one side of the equipment and storage area, as well as an open air tiki bar. The pool was built above the grade of the yard, so the rear fence is a partial retaining wall. The equipment used on this pool is exclusively Pentair – providing a salt generating system in the Intellichlor, a pump, filter, heater and automation.

The Pool Guy, Al Curtis, has received national acclaim and attention for his creation of this custom gunite and vinyl liner hybrid pool. He is sought after by industry partners to share how his unique creations in the backyard swimming  industry are designed and created.
