Q&A: Converting to a salt system, what do you recommend, what do I need?

Question:

HI, I have a 35,000 gallon pool that I am looking to switch over to salt water. I just had a few question. Seeing that it looks like with that type of system your pump needs to be on a timer and I use my pump all day when in use to run water for the slide and some jets so just wondering what to do about that and also what salt system would be good for that type of pool.

Answer:

We would recommend that you use the Pentair ic40 system, which can handle up to 35,000 gallons of water. The time should not be an issue since you will need to run the system at least 20 hours per day to create enough chlorine for your pool. The ic40 running 24 hours a day will create enough chlorine for a 40,000 gallon pool. Since you are just shy of that number, it is a little less. Most people that we install salt systems for run their systems for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will need both the ic40 salt cell, and the transformer.

Salt System Installation, what you need:

Pentair Power Unit

Pentair Salt Cell (ic40)

Zinc Anode (either the disc that sits in the skimmer, or the one that is plumbed into your equipment pad)

You’ll also need about 20-25 50# bags of pool salt (purchase from someone who stocks actual pool salt).

Here’s an article that will help explain what you need to convert your pool to a salt pool and generate your own chlorine. We can’t stress one very important part, don’t forget the zinc anode!
