Here in Southeastern Michigan we get what is called Winter…. In our area we must close our pools in the fall before the temperatures are freezing over night and before the snow falls. Then in the spring normally around April and May we have to open the pools. Their is no exception to this rule other then if you have an indoor pool. The reason that the pools must be closed in the fall with a true Winter is that your pipes can freeze, which will break all the pipes and the equipment. But what can be more damaging is if your pool is not winterized you can have the pop out effect happen which is where your pool pops out of the ground this is mostly known to happen with Fiberglass pool but in reality can happen to any in ground pool. Cracking also happens because of winter, and that the temperatures change, these can show up over the summer or the winter in your concrete.
